In March 2008, after a prolonged period of heavy rain in Nong Khai and also furth upstream, the Mekong River burst its banks. For many days, the streets of Nong Khai town were flooded. Fortunately, there was warning of the coming floods and many businesses and residents had time to prepare by making walls around their properties with both bricks and sand bags. The water spread through the three main streets of Nong Khai town - Rim Khong, Mee Chai and Prajak Roads.
Flooding was more severe in other towns in Nong Khai Province, such as Si Chiang Mai and Phon Phisai which are reletively lower lying.
